I Now Have Google Wave

google wave logoImage by liako via Flickr
An hour or so back I got an email from Google saying now I had access to Google Wave. Looks like they have come far enough in their rollout that they are even thinking of me now. Wow. This is exciting.

I must admit the first few minutes were kind of a downer. I guess I was expecting music.

Then it came to me. I have not participated in a full Wave discussion yet.

And Twitter thought it was real time. Wave is near time to the power of at least five.

If most of the PC applications that you are using today can be utilized from within a web service (GMail), then do you really need a dedicated PC desktop from Microsoft, no! Do you need a PC running an OS from Microsoft, no! Google Wave: Taking the Enterprise from Microsoft?
It is too early to tell what Google Wave is. Right now what we have is the equivalent of a basic operating system. The programs for it have not been written yet. Once the most ambitious programs have been written, the most dashing gadgets have been put on top of it, many enterprise applications have been put in motion, the Google Wave that we know today will start to look basic, barebones. The promise is immense and unrealized.

I think one big thing about Google Wave is going to be that it will show the thinking that the consumer space and the enterprise space are separate just is not true. There is only one space, the collaboration space. The division always was artificial.

And there is always the money part. How will money be made? I think Google is resigned to making big bucks by simply expanding the web space. The Google search box will be ubiquitous in Wave just like it has been ubiquitous on the web. The AdSense space will expand. Kaching. And there will be money for developers. The top developers will make money like successful startup founders. They could follow the ad model, or the pay per download model, or they could go enterprise with some features. There are several ways, all of them public and not secret at all.

I have no idea what Google Wave will look like in a year. I have some idea, but no specific idea.

Google Wave Developer Community: Asking For A Culture?

Google is about to get a vibrant developer community around Wave. This is a first for Google in terms of how big one can expect it to be. I guess the Android developer community also counts. The two can be considered the first among equals. But a mobile operating system was not something fundamentally new, Wave is.

There are about 20,000 people working for Google, many of them coders. Google has some of the smartest coders in the world. But not all of the smartest coders in the world work for Google. Most don't. It is a numbers game. Google is not big enough to house all the smartest coders in the world. Many of the smartest are soloists, or small group types who gutturally abhor anything corporate. The open source community appeals to many of them.

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...Image via CrunchBase

The Wave community will be a great platform for them. The top developers will make mega bucks. They will make much more than the late coming engineers at Google.

So if the Wave developer community is going to be larger than Google Corporate, and if many members of that developer community will make mega bucks, you have to ask, does that developer community need a culture? A codified value system? Will that evolve on its own? Or will each small group within that community have a slightly distinct culture and value system of its own?

Microsoft has had a developer community around Windows for as long as Windows has been around. The budding Wave community will be similar, only much, much bigger.

I take it for granted that a value system will emerge, just like a market will emerge. It will not be top down. It will not be something dictated by Google Corporate. It will be grassroots. It will likely be diverse. But it will emerge. It will have more in common with the unregulated, uncorporate open source community than Google Corporate. But that is no harbinger of clashes. The two cultures can create a happy symbiosis. That is precisely why just like it has been important to articulate the Google corporate culture, (The Google Corporate Culture) I think it is important to try and articulate the developer community culture.

Members of this developer community are more likely to show up for their local Wave MeetUps than jamborees at Googleplex, if only because the community will be global and scattered. Much of the community action will be online.

Possible Google Wave Applications And Innovations

If Google just delivered in a few months that it promised in this video, I would be happy enough. For one, this application will take blogging to a whole new level. And I have been excited enough about Zemanta and Disqus.

But you also wonder, where could this all lead to? What new applications, gadgets, innovations might we see? I have a feeling it will be like Gmail and Gmail Labs. They keep coming up with new, nifty features that you choose to add on.

People will be creating and consuming waves in quantity. New wave forms will become possible.

Google Wave will not be launched for a few more months. I think that might be enough time to get some developers to surprise us in major ways. I can't wait to see.

The mark of a successful web service or app is that (1) it creates buzz, and (2) developers start developing around it. Think of all the Facebook, Twitter, and iPhone applications. Wave will beat them all, I think.

The Wave is the web getting reinvented.

But "Google" has come to mean massive scale, and now it's giving the concept a try. ........ One way that it works is by upsetting the typical hierarchy of database architecture ....... Google Wave Architecture: Designed For Mass, Massive, Global Innovation

The technologies behind Google Wave have been designed to bring desktop like experiences into the browser paradigm, but end up doing more than that. The shift and growth are so sure and certain soon we will be missing browser like experiences while on the desktop. Why can't I don this with a desktop client?

The browser is about to take off. The richness will only grow. The speeds will only get faster. The bandwidths will go way up. The masses of people involved will go up both on the production and the consumption sides, and there will be not be any distinct boundary between the two.

The desktop was designed for one person. The browser was always meant for the masses, for crowds. Finally the promise is catching up with capabilities.

This is barely the beginning. Google Wave is three things: a tool, a platform and a protocol. There are many ways to use Google Wave as it exists today. There can be much innovation in how it gets applied. It is the difference between Blogger the service and all sorts of wonderful blogs you end up with. And then there are the platform and protocol aspects. Get geared for major technological leapfrogs. Here it is the difference between the iPhone and all its many applications, it is the difference between Hotmail and Gmail.

Documents form a tree within the wavelet. ....... the crucial part of Wave’s technology. Google Wave makes extensive use of Operational Transformations (OT) which are executed on the server. ....... Operations are sent to the server and propagated to each client on a character by character basis ......... Google Wave: Wave Of The Future?
Google Wave: If Email Were Invented Today

Microsoft's Bing - touting itself as a "decision engine" - was supposed to have all the buzz but then Google Wave came along. Is Bing an engineering marvel, or is it just marketing? One has to wonder. But Google Wave has the buzz for engineering, square and simple. The buzz is for being the next big thing.

The launch of Google Wave has been breathtaking. But I think when the developers around the world get to pounce on that Google Wave, the results are going to be equally breathtaking. Right now I don't know what to expect. I guess I will just keep my expectations high and vague.

With Android and Wave, Google has managed to suck the 2009 tech oxygen. When was the last time Google had this much buzz? When Gmail came out? When it went public? I think the current buzz - or, rather, ripples - are at new heights.

Google won't run all the Wave servers CNET News Google has said it will "federate" Wave. That means it will make it possible for anyone to operate their own Wave server and have it communicate with other Wave servers. This is just how e-mail works today: Anyone can run an e-mail server that can send messages to and receive messages from any other e-mail system. ...... Today, employees must sort through messy "reply-all" e-mails to engage with content as a group. If you're working with a document in SharePoint, you must "check it in" and "check it out," making it hard for multiple people to contribute in real-time.
Google Wave: Gaming Impact Examiner.com it's going to revolutionize internet communications, and offer both individuals and businesses a number of new methods of connecting ....... I know a number of people I'd love to play with, but chat format games just lack a certain immediacy that Wave offers. ......
