The Chrome Browser At 10%

Google Chrome IconImage via WikipediaLast I checked, it was at 5%, but even back then it deserved to do better. Next thing you know it will have hit 20%. Chrome has nowhere to go but up.

InfoWorld: Chrome breaks 10 percent browser market share for the first time

Chrome is the browser I use. It is minimalist. It is fast. It does not feel like there is anything at the top. All you get is the web. I like that.

Google calls it a "modern" browser.

Google's dragging its feet on the Chrome OS Netbook is unforgivable. That is what will take the Chrome browser roaring into the 20s and 30s and beyond.

The Google Wave Architecture

With Google Wave, Google has proven it is still the 800 pound gorilla of web technology innovation. So you have to ask, what is behind Google Wave? What's under the hood? Looking at the architecture also gives us a better idea of all that might become possible with this new heart-pounding innovation.

Google wants Wave to become a fundamental web application like email, that most fundamental of all web applications. Email is not actually a web application, it has been around for decades, it just migrated to the web when Sabeer Bhatia came along. Microsoft already had email but still paid Bhatia $400 million for Hotmail, so I guess the migration was a seismic event.

Google offers email, so do Yahoo and Microsoft and every ISP worth its salt, and all those web programs talk to each other. I have the option to send an email from paramendra at gmail dot com to paramendra at yahoo dot com or paramendra at hotmail dot com. Wave is going to be like that.

But only Google does the innovation in Gmail. Wave is not going to be like that. Any outside party could innovate Wave and add new and exciting features, and numerous will. I expect there to be so much innovation in the Wave space that I expect Wave to become like an operating system. We have now moved beyond talking of a browser as an operating system. Now we are going to have to talk of a web application as an operating system. That application is Wave.

Google And Browsers And More

I just read news, Google Snaps Up Top Firefox Programmer. The guy, Ben Googler, I mean Goodger, (how did his parents know, or rather ancestors), announced the news on his blog. That tells you where he belongs.

In one of Larry Ellison's biographies, the earlier ill-written one, there is talk of how the guy - his lifestory reads like fascinating - would promise of software that half the time never got delivered, but he hogged marketshare anyway! Google is the opposite of that. It delivers and surprises. Noone saw the digitizing libraries project coming.

But there is such noise Google is angling for a browser. That would be a major step. You have a slim machine running on Linux, you download a Google browser, you do your word procesing online - the technology is already there, just look at all the features with Blogger, Gmail meets all your email needs, personal as well as work, and so on, and where is Microsoft now! You handle all your text, audio, video, data processing stuff online. There is no Desktop, so to speak of. Wow. I mean, with Internet2, you have 10 gigabytes per second kind of speed. You are always on. With that kind of reliability, you won't need a desktop.

Two schools emerged within Microsoft in the mid-1990s, one Windows, but the other one wanted a new universe entirely around a browser. MSFT would be the gorilla dot com. But Gates squashed that effort. To Gates' credit, he gave some valid reasons, like, how do you make money if you give everything away! (Google's answer: you sell ads, stupid!)

Windows made Microsoft what it is, but it also might be the albatross around its neck.
