Larry Page On Innovation

“You know, we always have these debates: We have all this money, we have all these people, why aren’t we doing more stuff? You may say that Apple only does a very, very small number of things, and that’s working pretty well for them. But I find that unsatisfying. I feel like there are all these opportunities in the world to use technology to make people’s lives better. At Google we’re attacking maybe 0.1 percent of that space. And all the tech companies combined are only at like 1 percent. That means there’s 99 percent virgin territory. Investors always worry, “Oh, you guys are going to spend too much money on these crazy things.” But those are now the things they’re most excited about—YouTube, Chrome, Android. If you’re not doing some things that are crazy, then you’re doing the wrong things.”

How Is Google Different?

For one, it has stayed supremely innovative. Anthropologists need to look into Google's culture. There is something in that culture.

Google is my favorite tech company. I am a Google fanboy like some people are Apple fanboys. Hardware is afterthought to me. For me a laptop is something that takes me to the Chrome browser.

Robert Bork on antitrust: Google is no Microsoft
a case of competitors' sour grapes ..... Bork's mention of competitors is a not-so-veiled swipe at a lobbying group called FairSearch.org that's funded by Google competitors including Microsoft, Oracle, and Kayak. FairSearch claims that governments "must act now" against Google "to protect competition, transparency, and innovation in online search." ..... FTC action against Google "for its search practices would necessitate regulation of search algorithms and product improvements, which would retard the current pace of innovation in Internet search that has created enormous gains in consumer welfare."

Google+ At 400 Million Users

I wonder how much of this can be attributed to months of bad press coverage Facebook has been getting for the hammering it has received on Wall Street.

400 million in 12 months is wild.

As predicted, Google+ passes 400M registered users, now has 100M monthly active users
over 400,000,000 people have upgraded to Google+. It was only a year ago that we opened public sign-up, and we couldn’t have imagined that so many people would join in just 12 months. While Google+ is all about creating a better experience across Google, it’s also a destination. And here too, I’m happy to report that we have just crossed 100,000,000 monthly active users on Google+

21 releases already? That is fast paced innovation. Chrome has been the best browser for a while now. It's just that Internet Explorer has legacy users.

Google Chrome 21 stable release adds Retina MacBook Pro support, webcam use without plugins
Chrome 21 is now crisp and clear for those who took the plunge on Apple's new laptop but would rather not cling to Safari for the web. No matter what hardware you're using, Google has rolled in its promised WebRTC support to let webcams and microphones have their way without Flash or other plugins. Other notable tweaks like wider support for Cloud Print
New senses for the web
What if web apps could see? What if they could hear? ..... The getUserMedia API is the first step in WebRTC, a new real-time communications standard which aims to allow high-quality video and audio communication on the web

Handwrite

The mobile experience is different. There are few places where that is as starkly obvious as when you try to type. The mobile screen is not conducive to typing.

Make your mark on Google with Handwrite for Mobile and Tablet Search
speaking your queries, getting results before you finish typing, or searching by image. Now there’s a new way for you to interact with Google: Handwrite for web search on mobile phones and tablets ..... Handwrite enables you to search by just writing letters with your finger most anywhere on your device’s screen—there’s no keyboard that covers half of the screen and no need for hunt-and-peck typing. ..... Since you can write anywhere, you don’t have to look back and forth repeatedly from the keyboard to the search box...... Handwrite is experimental, and works better in some browsers than others—on Android devices, it works best in Chrome. For now, we’ve enabled Handwrite for iOS5+ devices, Android 2.3+ phones and Android 4.0+ tablets—in 27 languages

Make your mark on Google with Handwrite for Mobile and Tablet Search

Handwrite is a leap. And it just might be the friendliest way to type yet on the mobile screen. When you speak commands, you disturb people around you. And hopefully you are surrounded by people often.

This is so good people might demand it on their laptop screens. Although laptops might come with a warning sign. Do not burn your fingers from too much handwriting.
